I recently visited Shaunavon for work and stumbled upon this hidden gem on Main Street. The food was amazing, with very generous portion sizes. This small restaurant is a must-visit in Shaunavon!

I try to test out small town Chinese food places as you get some real gems some times... not so much in this case.

Now it wasn't terrible. Admittedly if I lived in or around town I'd probably be pretty happy but I just found this place as being "cheap".

I usually get chicken balls, ginger beef, and rice as that seems to be standard for my circles. I got the shaingha noodles (instead of rice) as they usually aren't offered as a side are typically pretty tough to get right , and I'm usually not impressed with the fried rice.

Chicken balls are kind of a standard of Canadian Chinese food and these chicken balls were far from great. The chicken inside ... well what was there was about half the size of the end of my pinky finger (like a small 4x4 Lego brick was the largest) I feel you should be able to cut a chicken ball in half and be able to see chicken in either side obviously from my photo not the case. The chicken was also a bit chewy, it seems like it was precooked (possibly frozen) and then refried. The chicken batter was tasty enough and the inside was fluffy but so was the outside, I like a crispy outside. Combined with the precooked chicken I think frying the chicken ball longer could have a fresh cooked inside, a fluffy inside and a crisp outside.

The ginger beef was better. The beef wasn't chewy and the batter was nice and crisp with a satisfying crunch. It seemed to have a bit too much ginger or not enough honey/sugar. There was no extra onions or green peppers. I like that there are no extra veggies but I know some folks like this. It seemed like there could have been a bit more ginger beef plated. The strips were pretty thin and there was maybe 4 or 5 strips which just feels again like they were cutting corners.

The shanghai noodles were pretty good but the cabbage that was cooked with seemed to be added last minute and was definitely undercooked. There was a bunch of oil left on my plate in the end.

All in all this isn't a bad place. The food was very tasty and as far as small town Chinese places go I'd be pretty happy to have a this place in my town.

All in all it feels like it's just cheap, the prices aren't low enough to feel like it's a sweet deal but the quality of the cooking is JUST below the line. My food came VERY fast... I'd wait an extra five minutes for fresh chicken I'd pay an extra 2 bucks for that much more meat. It's evident the folks here offer great service and know what they are doing.. it just feels like it's so close to the mark but not quite there.

I don't feel ripped off but I'd definitely look forward to better Chinese in a larger center.

We sat ourselves and waited a long time before anyone came out to the front. Longer to get our order taken. Never asked us what we wanted to drink. The food came another 30 minutes or more after that. The guy at the front went past some people seated so many times without a greeting or taking their order that they finally just left. It was not busy inside. The food we got was awful. Very tiny spread out on plate. Both had ordered the meal for 1. The sweet n sour chicken was so vinegar-y, not sweet, and super hard over-cooked with not much meat inside. Cut my gums! There was no more than a tablespoon of veg in the vegetable chow mein over uncooked noodles, one fork full if you could eat them raw, crunchy tasteless. I asked why there was no chow mein, but these raw hard noodles and that we would not have ordered it if we knew. Later he came past and asked if I 'still didn't like the chow mein'. Offered nothing. The fried rice was not fried. Weird. Worst meal this year. Neither of us ate it up. But, then when I went to pay, the other man who had been in the back, says 'do you live here?' 'That's why I've never seen you in here before'. Rude the way he said it. He could have just thanked us for trying them, or coming in, or anything else. Didn't care. Won't be back.

Sometime ago I wrote an unkind review of the Shawnee Restaurant. I have since eaten meals there three time since the NEW Shawnee opened with new owners and staff. The food was very flavorful, freshly made and hot, even the take out. I am thrilled. Well done and keep up the great cooking. I have deleted the previous review I wrote. This restaurant has new owners and should be given a fresh start.

First time back since the new owners and I must say the place looks great with the renovations, lovely paintings and pretty flashing colorful lights but I would caution anyone who's prone to flashing/strobing lights or seizures. The friendly service and excellent freshly made food go perfect hand in hand with reasonable pricing. I will be telling others to go here.

First time earing there and never again. That was the most disgusting food. We took a couple bites and left. Food was over cooked and you can taste the burnt oil from the deep fryer. Very disappointed

Visiting Shaunavon for work, I stopped by here for some food. Their meal for one was perfect. They have good sized portions and it's a good option if you're craving Chinese food.

We came in with a small group and were accommodated very easily. Order the dinner for eight and when the food started coming out it didn't seem like it was going to stop! Plenty to eat, good price, and the food was hot.

Definitely will be back.
