I was looking to purchase a 1 bedroom condo for around $450,000 and filled out a form online to have a realtor contact me--I did not specifically seek out Eli to represent me. Eli called me and provided the same generic summary that most realtors provide clients at the first meeting-- in short, the "complimentary" wisdom he offered me was that the market is competitive and that I must bid as high as I possibly can to secure a home. Most of what Eli told me I already knew as I had been scouring the market for a new home over the past three years, and needless to add, did not enter the market expecting my realtor to work a miracle. Eli become immediately dismissive of my budget, and his aggressively condescending attitude indicated that he perceived me to be a novice haphazardly navigating the housing market under a grave delusion. He patronizingly addressed me as if I was wholly ignorant of the reality of a highly competitive and absurdly inflated housing market that most people in the lower mainland have been contending with over the past decade.

I opted to work with another realtor who also offered me a realistic gist of the market but assured me that if we were unable to secure the purchase of our preferred unit at the offered price, he was willing to help me find a home that was closer to my budget. His tone was far more understanding and patient, and he took a more humane approach to helping me find and finance a new home. The realtor I chose to work with set realistic expectations, but also remained optimistic and encouraging through the entire process. Once I politely advised Eli that I had chosen to work with another realtor, instead of respecting my decision, he continued contacting me--sending me multiple texts inquiring about my conversations with my new realtor. It felt like a bad breakup, where I could not shake off an obsessive ex. As a potential buyer who has switched realtors in the past, this experience was extremely unusual and highly unsettling. I had to resort to ignoring his texts before he finally ceased communication. Just weeks after working with my new realtor, I purchased a spacious brand new (2022 build) 1 bedroom condo in a central location in Surrey for a little over my budget. I am so glad that I decided against writing an offer with Eli who insisted on numbers wildly out of budget, and found another agent who was far more accommodating, respectful and pleasant to work with.
