An unplanned afternoon delight @ Deep Cove Winery
The setting was serene, with lush vines stretching as far as the eye could see, adding an extra layer of magic to the tasting experience.
Upon arrival, i was greeted with warmth and genuine hospitality by my host. She went above and beyond to make me feel welcomed, offering a personalized experience that made the entire tasting feel like a private, indulgent retreat.
The tasting was never rushed, and my host took her time to ensure that i was comfortable and enjoying every moment.
About my host, Sietara.
Having worked in the wine industry, I believe that the wine world will greatly benefit by welcoming this future star winemaker.
She is incredibly knowledgeable, offering insights into the winemaking process and, moreover, possesses an unabashed enthusiasm and passion about her career - 2 magic ingredients that will make her wine creations stand out, diluting the ocean of boring mediocrity, strictly driven by the financial gains.
My personal views on tasted wines:
ORTEGA
~ Appearance - Cloudy(unfilteted?), yellow through the fog, thick legs of glycerol
~ Nose - Initially intense and pleasant aromas of pungent gooseberries. After 5 min, it transitioned into sweet grapefruits with a very faint apricot
~ Palate - Mostly bitter gooseberries and a lightning streak of preserved Moroccal lemons on the back
QUEEN WHITE
A blend of Pinot Gris and Ortega
~ Appearance - Clear 18K gold, medium legs
~ Nose - Interesting - quite strong burnt rubber mixed with furniture lacquer - classic tertiary aromas in a very mature German Riesling - an unusual curiousity
~ Palate - Sweet grapefruits dominate, with a touch of gooseberries and preserved lemons on the back
2022 MERLOT
~ Appearance - Beautiful mauve, clearing to the rim, thick glycerol legs, minúte bubbles with swirling(?)
~ Nose - Delicious sweet prunes and brandy soaked dark cherries
~ Palate - slightly bitter tannins upfront with slightly tangy red Montmorency cherries. Personally, i feel that it's a bit too sour and acidic on the back end.
2021 MALBEC
~ Appearance - Gorgeous garnet with thick texture, a little clearing to the rim and beautiful legs.
~ Nose - Spectacular aromas of reduced pomegranate/blackberry juice
~ Palate - Tart sour cherries, a whiff of star anise/dry cassia(sweet cinnamon) on mid-palate, gently dissolving into slightly sweet pomegranate
ALCHEMY
Appearance - Almost transparent jeweled garnet, quite clear to the rim, thick and streaky legs
~ Nose - Traditional Bordeaux : graphite and cedar pencil shavings, blackcurrant and a very slight whiff of sweet balsamic reduction.
~ Palate - A proper marriage of Right/Left bank of Bordeaux. Very young, with long development ahead. A seamless balance of red currants, sweet Virginia pipe tobacco, leather and a hint of barberries.
Quite outstanding and a star of the tasting.
Whether you’re a wine connoisseur or a casual enthusiast, I highly recommend Deep Cove winery.
