4/5
I really wanted to give 5 stars because the location was 5/5 and the owner was 5/5 and the cabins were 5/5. I debated back and forth.
This resort had 4 cabins. The first two were newer and the last two were built in the 1930s. The first cabin was occupied and we were in cabin 4. So it was super private and even though cabin 1 had a campfire and people on the deck we didn’t hear anything from them. The cabin had for the wood burning stove. The cabin was 1 bedroom, one bath with a kitchen, dining area and living area. It had a nice storage closet that was not in the bedroom which allowed the early riser to prep for the day without waking the sleeper in the bedroom. The kitchen was very well equipped with all dishes, soap, towels needed. Hot water and water pressure was great! The furniture wasn’t fancy but it was super comfortable! We didn’t bother with the tv but the wifi worked well enough to get google map directions to local attractions.
The location was phenomenal. Located close to Crystal creek and Taylor reservoir, Taylor dam and Taylor river. All amazing fishing locations. Almont was super charming with another beautiful fishing spot at Three Rivers. Not far from Gunnison River or another majestic spot called Wilson’s landing. One evening we drove out to Kebler’s Pass. The leaves were changing so the sunset and Golden hour was possibly one of the most beautiful things I have ever seen.
I called the owner while in Salida on our way to the cabin and she called back quickly to give me the run down on checking in and that the cabin had wood for the stove and if not there was a caretaker on property that could help. Lovely polite friendly helpful owner.
The price of the cabin’s cannot be beat. The cabins were perfect for my husband and me. I highly recommend them and will stay again and again. There’s just so much beauty and great fishing. I caught and released two beautiful trouts in a matter of 15 minutes on Taylor reservoir.
The reason for the 4/5 star rating:
1) We arrived about 4 hours after check in. The cabin is a rugged historic cabin (5/5) and everything was spotless (5/5), except for the microwave which was caked with food and the bedding which was covered in dirt and twigs. When we came in the bedding was piled on a dresser (as shown in picture) and it wasn’t clean or fresh. The sheets were sitting on the edge of the bed and looked as if they had been dropped on the forest floor and tossed on the bed. Nobody bothered to dust them off. There were pieces of forest and clumps of dirt scattered across the bed, stuck to the linens and the floor surrounding the bed. It wasn’t a super big deal because there is laundry room steps from the cabin and a vacuum and a broom but it’s worth mentioning.
2) It would have been nice if there was some information regarding public use areas. Like a map or handwritten list of recommendations to put in our map app. I only say this because the Gunnison is huge! And using the “x near me” prompt on Google had maps recommending places up to 4 hours away. I love hiking and wasn’t able to locate any areas within 2 hours drive. I know they were there but I couldn’t find them. The owner did say she was born and raised in the area and kindly invited us to call her if we had questions but I didn’t want to be a bother and we were able to locate public use fishing areas to fill the weekend.
All in all, I would absolutely stay here again and absolutely recommend Silent Spring Resort.
